So there I was...... (Any story that starts that way is bound to be bleak if you happen to be an aviator......and yep, It was pretty bleak) Restart: So there I was with the most perplexing total electrical failure imaginable. Dead batteries. So dead as to disable the transponder and all communication gear for that matter. Obviously, the alternator was failing to do it's job or hey, maybe it was the regulator. All I knew is that I was heading to my next air show with a crippled electrical system and I was frantically looking down the road for a hospitable pit stop.
I called up the next show in line and asked them to check with the mechanics they knew, giving them a brief description of my problem. The producer of my next event, Dar Hamre called back the next day with the very sad news that support for an aircraft such as mine was unattainable at their local but she highly suggested that I reach out to the show following hers. No sooner did she say it that I was on the phone again. The producer of that event, Bret Binnie soon got in contact with his people and had things set up for me.
A day or so later, I arrived in Wetaskiwin Alberta and sought out the facility that I had been directed to. I was impressed from the start. They knew that I was arriving and had cleared all their work to be able to assist me in an emergent fashion. Not only did they do this, they also arranged to have their foremost authority on electrical systems at my disposal. As if that wasn't enough, I also came to learn to my entire delight that my electrical system was extremely well know to the gentleman working on my craft and that they were also very familiar with the power plant I was using and ....yes, they also work on Stearmans regularly. Needless to say, I thought myself very fortunate to have found them.
A day and a half later, I was packing Rhapsody up again and all her issues were resolved thanks to some seriously dedicated people. They understood that having my aircraft down for any amount of time was not an issue and they undertook the task of repairing her in record time.
Wetaskiwin Air Services did an outstanding job in returning us to the circuit. Their facilities are top notch as is the caliber of experience and knowledge held by the technicians employed there. They were also extremely expedient in servicing my aircraft and to me....that means the world.
Third Strike Wingwalking offers our highest possible recommendation for Wetaskiwin Air Services. They saw the problem, understood the time constraints, rose to the challenge and accomplished the task at hand superbly. Our sincere gratitude is owed Wetaskiwin Air Services for rescuing both me and sweet little Rhapsody. Thank you guys, you made our life on the road a lot better than you could imagine.
